Obviously the best acoustic bass is an upright/contrabass/double bass, and they are pretty awesome, but unless your dedicating a good deal of your musical self to the bass in particular, these HUGE instruments arent really practical for your average hobbyist or ametuer musician. Then you have the guitarron, I've had very little instrument with this mexican bass, that is mainly seen in mariachi performances. The guitarron has a decent sized sound chamber that can be heard with a full ensymble, unfortunately these instruments can be a bit limiting when it comes to octaves (the fretless fingerboard is very small) The other option is what they call an acoustic-electric bass guitar. These instruments resemble a giant acoustic guitar, the fret board equivalent to an electric bass guitar. The sound chamber is much smaller than the upright and shallow in comparision to the guitarron. There are certain tricks to make these instruments sound better acoustically, first and foremost; professional diagnostics, bronze strings or better yet tape wound strings will also improve the acoustics, however even the best models are pressed to keep up with two acoustic guitars, which is of course why all come with built-in preamps.
